Thought to be the first British attempt, the Dorset Destroyers Wheelchair Rugby Club is aiming to get into the Guinness Book of Records by beating the current record held in Poland.
The Destroyers have at least 18 players on the day and the Royal Signals and 4com will be providing players to play against them. 4com are the sponsors of the event and Rossmore Leisure Centre’s manager Sean Gabriel has donated the hall hire for free.
It will put Dorset well and truly on the map for Wheelchair Rugby, and it will also give more publicity to the sport itself.
Whilst it’s a small sport compared to something like rugby, it was the most-watched Paralympic sport on TV and is all a part of Nick Coombs’s (chair of Disability Sports in Dorset) vision to build a Centre of Disability Sporting Excellence in Poole for the South of England. “We need to build the clubs and show that there is demand before we can get funding, and this massive event will help attract players to the club and the sport itself,” he said.
