The service provides free advice and practical support to help vulnerable residents in Dorset improve or adapt their homes so they can continue to live as independently as possible.
Typical work includes level access showers, stair lifts and ramps.
A Handy Van service specialises in carrying out small works such as putting up pictures and shelves, moving small furniture, re-hanging doors, fitting door chains, security lights and smoke alarms.
This is complemented by a Housing Options service which helps people decide whether it makes sense to stay put and have work done to their home or move, maybe to a home with all the facilities they need already provided.
Dorset Home Service is a not-for-profit service funded by Dorset County Council, the NHS and District and Borough Councils.
Robin James, Service Development Officer for Housing and Support at Dorset County Council, said, “Simple adaptations to a person’s home, such as grab rails or adding improved steps can have a huge impact on their quality of life.
“It can be very difficult to get small repairs and improvements carried out at a reasonable cost by a reliable contractor. The Dorset Home Service operates a service that does just that. The operators are all CRB checked, are reliable and low cost.
“We also offer inspection of the works on site, information on the different ways of paying for the work, including grants from the council, home insulation grants and charitable assistance.
“We are pleased to be working in partnership with local contractors, and people can be safe in the knowledge that the help they are getting is from trusted tradesmen and advisers.”
Harry Capron, acting director for adult and community services at Dorset County Council, said, “Housing is a key factor to independence and well-being, and the Dorset Home Service can help with aids, adaptations as well as keeping everything in the home and garden in good order.
“Each year, hundreds of older and disabled people benefit from the service, and we want to make sure people know that the help is available.”
